I am here in Cairo 13 years this spring; I credit Egypt for giving me a language through which I speak. By taking part in technical workshops given by fellow Egyptian artists---collage and silk screen, I acquired an idiom, a dialect of visual images that allows me to speak about this particular place on earth and my relation to it. I admire Islamic art's geometric design and graphics, the elaborate curvilinear of the arabesque, the architecture of Cairo as well as the Pharonic footprint left in history. I feel affection for Cairo's caffeine and nicotine induced rhythm and how the city moves, what she sounds like and what she has to say. Past and present meet here in idiosyncratic ways. I feel that the presence of all periods are alive now, time is an illusion, layer upon layer of history exist together, inhabit the same space….I take my envisioning spectacles to see the Islamic Arab influences shining through the deeper history of the ancient Pharonic period, modern Cairo and my personal experience encrusted on top. I am compelled to give back what I have discovered about creativity; where it originates, how to find it in one's self. Like a scientist that presents research to his findings; I offer the way in which I made my personal discoveries so that others may find their own way through. That is my motivation to offer workshops and courses in Cairo. Cosima exhibits her artwork in our center. To view her artwork please come and visit at Insight Inside.
